These eastern Kurds were given land by a Safavid Dynasty King in the NE of Persia and in return they were to protect the Persian farmers from Turkoman and Belouch/Afghan incursions. Over these approx. 400 years cultural mixing shows in the rugs, namely the Turkoman border from the north, and the overall sombre palette of the Baluchi to the east.

This is a “true” rug, not made for western consumption, expressing a strong talismanic cultural purpose. These people are an ancient civilization, only outwardly Islamic, and this rug is a perfect example of their pre-Islamic Shamanist language.
