Original Conditions

We are proud to deal in rugs made under the “original conditions” from which all others arose.

What is Original Conditions?

Discovered over 2,500 years ago, there is still nothing greater than the traditional method of warp, weft, and hand-tied knots using naturally dyed wool from local sheep.

  • It begins with the flock
Sons herd the sheep, assist with selective breeding, and move with fathers along ancient migration routes, choosing pastures, shearing the wool, and separating fleece for different uses.

  • Wool preparation is collective work
Washing, carding, spinning, and plying the fibres are carried out by the whole family as part of daily life.

  • Dyes and knowledge are women’s heritage
Girls gather dye plants, while grandmothers pass down weaving traditions that shape both skill and identity.

  • Tools are made by hand, within the clan
Loom makers and their sons craft and warp the looms that hold the future design, ensuring readiness for weaving.

  • Weaving is communal art
Sisters sit together knotting the same carpet, talking, laughing, and sharing the slow creation of a single artwork.

  • Finishing is an art form in itself
Specialist washers, stretchers, and quiet repairers of mistakes bring the rug to life in its final form.

  • It is a true family economy
Dyeing and sometimes loom making may happen outside the family, but within the clan no money changes hands, all share equally, and leaders work alongside everyone else.

In a world drowning in mass production, glued backings, synthetic fibres, and disposable décor, we use the term Original Conditions as an invitation to look again. Not with nostalgia, but with respect. It is our way of gently educating people that handmade rugs were never meant to be cheap, rushed, or fashionable for a season. They are the ongoing expression of families, herds, landscapes, and stories that have existed far longer than any factory. By choosing rugs made under original conditions, we are choosing to honour the art, the land, and the people who still practice it. We are choosing patience over convenience, quality over novelty, and living culture over machine-made imitation. Open your mind, and you enter a world where utility becomes beauty, and beauty becomes legacy.
