There is a special gravity in the feel of an Antique Mongolian Rug. It is not the weight of wool alone, though the pile is famously thick. It is not just the richness of dye, though the blues and golds are deep as riverstone. No—it is the weight of time. These rugs, particularly those woven in the 19th century from the Pao Tou region of Inner Mongolia, carry the full breadth of northern Asia’s spiritual and nomadic legacy. They are not just decorative objects. They are thresholds.

Pao Tou, located just north of the Great Wall in what is now Inner Mongolia, is known for a unique and highly distinctive weaving style.

This lack of mechanical precision is precisely what gives the Pao Tou rug its life. These rugs were never intended for palatial floors. They were for prayer, for meditation, for sitting with your back to the cold wind and your feet to the stove. Each Antique Mongolian Rug is thus a blend of resilience and reverence.

The wool itself is hand-spun, sourced from high-altitude sheep bred for their resilience. Rich in lanolin and naturally insulating, this wool gives the rug a density that is both functional and beautiful. And because the weavers relied on vegetable dyes, the colours mellow gracefully over time without ever becoming dull.

What you receive is not just a rug, but a kind of portable shrine. A text in wool.

Few remain in such condition. Fewer still with true Pao Tou lineage. When one appears, it is not a trend. It is a gift.
