The word Mahal is a term invented by European merchants to encompass the mostly similar carpets of Arak, Sultanabad and surrounding areas. This one has the double, blue-dyed cotton weft and medium dense knotting typical of this fertile foothills region between the Zagros Mountains and the desert plains to the east.
The red field has a modest central medallion with anchors of weeping willows and suggested strings of hyacinth and other florals forming a demurely cohesive orchestration. There is a suggestion of the infinite with the medallion edges just showing under the borders.
