The Mori Bokhara Rug Story
The 1950’s and 60’s saw large quantities of finely woven rugs appearing on the European and UK markets, seemingly out of nowhere.
Turned out it was the USSR dumping the rugs of the Central Asian Turkmen during a collective farm program.
As fine as the Persians at a fraction of the price, these Turkoman rugs, called Bokhara after the market city, became a staple of private clubs and well to do homes.
Many Turkmen had left the USSR and seeing the commercial success of their own traditions found a sympathetic weaving culture in modern Pakistan. This Persianate/Mughal culture had the technology, the traditional expertise, and the capital to copy the Bokhara, and in great quantity.
A good friend’s father, the esteemed Mohd Ilyas Butt, would send a 40foot container every few days to the doyen of London merchants, Mr Kelaty, such was the demand.
From those heady days of quality to today’s cheap copies, we find the best are still around Sangla Hill, near Lahore, sourced by Ilyas’ son Bilal Butt. The wool is fine Argentine Merino, spun in 3 ply and knotted into luxury with fine Persian knots.
