The Rare Antique Qazvin Rug is one of the most elegant and distinguished examples of Persian city weaving. At The Rug Shop, we are honoured to offer this exceptional piece online, where connoisseurs and collectors can appreciate its refinement, complexity, and enduring beauty. To encounter a rug of this calibre is to experience Persian textile art at its most graceful.

Qazvin, located northwest of Tehran, has long been an important cultural and artistic centre. During the Safavid era, it was even the capital of Persia for a time, and its arts flourished. The weaving tradition that grew in Qazvin reflects this heritage of sophistication. While more famous centres such as Tabriz and Kashan often dominate the conversation, a Rare Antique Qazvin Rug represents a quieter, less common branch of Persian city carpet design—one that collectors value for its distinct character and scarcity.

The Rare Antique Qazvin Rug is known for its elegant balance of form and detail. Many Qazvin rugs feature medallion and corner designs, with finely drawn arabesques, floral sprays, and scrolling vines. The pattern work is intricate but never overwhelming, allowing the eye to rest and wander with pleasure.

Colours are typically soft and harmonious: rich madder reds, deep indigo blues, delicate ivory, and accents of rose and sage green. Together they create a palette that feels both stately and warm. Over time, these natural dyes mellow into a gentle patina that gives the rug a timeless charm.

The construction of a Rare Antique Qazvin Rug is a testament to the skill of its makers. The foundation is cotton, providing a stable base, while the pile is made from high quality Persian sheep wool, clipped short for a refined look. The knotting is fine and consistent, allowing for clarity in even the most detailed motifs.

This fineness does not come at the expense of durability. The weaving is dense, ensuring that the rug remains strong and serviceable even after more than a century of use. To hold a Rare Antique Qazvin Rug in good condition today is to hold a piece of art that has survived the passage of time with grace.

Persian carpets have always been more than decoration—they are carriers of meaning. The floral motifs and scrolling vines in a Rare Antique Qazvin Rug often allude to the gardens of paradise, a central theme in Persian art. The central medallion may represent unity or the cosmic centre, drawing the viewer inward.

This is a rug to contemplate as well as to live with. It rewards close looking, revealing new details as the light changes and as one spends time in its presence.

Because Qazvin was a smaller weaving centre compared to Tabriz or Kashan, Rare Antique Qazvin Rugs are genuinely rare on the market. This scarcity, combined with their beauty and quality, makes them highly sought after by collectors.

At The Rug Shop, we source Qazvin rugs carefully, ensuring that each one we offer meets the highest standards of authenticity and condition. The rug we present here has been preserved and washed with care, its colours vibrant and its structure sound.

The Rare Antique Qazvin Rug is a work of art that carries within it the elegance of Persian city weaving, the subtlety of natural dyes, and the harmony of classical design. Its rarity makes it special, its beauty makes it unforgettable, and its craftsmanship ensures it will endure for many more years.

Owning a Rare Antique Qazvin Rug from The Rug Shop is not merely acquiring a carpet—it is acquiring a piece of Persian cultural history, a textile that continues to inspire and delight over a century after it was made.
