Antique Kurdish Rug

NW Iran, Azerbaijan Barat

19th Century

190x125cms

The indigo blue field with three medallions surrounded by a border of simple floral forms on a white ground.

This field design is typical of the Kurds of Eastern Anatolia but all other factors point to Persian Kurdistan: The palette has no cochineal reds, and the range of blues and blue greens firmly place it in Persia. The border of carnations is also very Persian.

It belongs to a highly respected group of Persian Kurd rugs that include Sauj Bulagh and Maragheh.  In the past this type of rug was called Kurd Kazak because the rich yet limited palette is typical of the best Caucasian Kazaks. It is however more finely knotted, in keeping with the Kurdish traditions.
