Tuban Batik 275x95cms

This stunningly beautiful pagi sore batik is an old and rare example of a unique style produced in the town of Tuban, in the Northeast of Java island. The Coarse cotton fabric is hand woven and the complex wax-resist design is totally hand painted (tulis). The woman who produced this textile actually grew, harvested, and spun the cotton into thread, before weaving, painting and dyeing it. Only natural dyes were employed in the process.

This piece has been designed into two parts and painted with two different designs, so that when worn as a sarong, the wearer has a choice of two different 'looks'.
