How to break up the space, “horror vacui” as the Italians say.

When we were last there, in 2018, we visited the mausoleum of the Biblical figures Esther and Mordechai who had escaped from the Babylonians over the wild mountain corridors of the Zagros range, where this Persian Bakhtiari Rug originates. It is a resounding call of tradition, a masterpiece of texture and tone that reflects the life and movement of the Bakhtiari tribe. Proudly offered by The Rug Shop, this rug is a perfect embodiment of strength and artistry, built to last yet yet impishly agile.

The Bakhtiari tribe/nation of the Zagros Mountains celebrate craftsmanship and enduring strength. This rug is thickly knotted of robust sheep wool, its dense pile designed for a lifetime of use. The dyes—both vegetal and mineral—combine in strong contrasts to create a visual impact that is unmistakably Persian and unmistakably powerful.

The name Bakhtiari is tied to a tribal confederation known for its semi-nomadic life, seasonal migration, and fierce independence. The rugs carry this spirit. They are bold and unapologetic, with patterns that reflect a tribal memory not shaped by textbooks but by time, weather, and soil. Many feature garden layouts, panelled fields, and stylised flora, symbolising paradise, survival, and the sacred order of nature.

The tertiary hues like the earthen browns are the result of mixed vegetable dyes, extracted from roots, bark, and flower heads. These tones are chosen for a chromatic harmony that feels bold without being brash, like the landscape itself.

Though new rugs are still being made in the Bakhtiari style, older examples from the mid to late twentieth century offer a particular richness. The wool quality is often higher, and the dyes more varied, reflecting a time before synthetic shortcuts became widespread. The Rug Shop seeks out those examples where the traditions have not been diluted, where every knot speaks with confidence.
