Firuzabad (trans. turquoise town) is the winter quarters of the Qashgai where the most densely woven rugs are made. Too heavy to accompany the migration they stay in the town and surrounding villages. Untill, of course, The Rug Shop gets there!
Note the unusual asymmetric treatment of the pattern. A rug for more than a lifetime.
The turquoise name is not because the stone is found there but rather the colour of the nearby lake.

Among the great tribal weavings of Persia, the Qashgai Persian Rug holds a singular place—vivid, powerful, and utterly alive. It is a rug that does not ask to be admired so much as lived with, walked upon, and gradually understood. Each piece is a thread of nomadic life, a fragment of the landscape made tactile, drawn from the hands of weavers whose ancestors followed the sun between pasture and plain.
Woven by the Qashgai people—a confederation of Turkic-speaking tribes settled in the Fars province of southwest Persia—these rugs are among the most expressive in the entire Persian tradition. For centuries, the Qashgai have preserved a tribal identity forged in movement. And in the warp and weft of a true Qashgai Persian Rug, that movement is still palpable.
At The Rug Shop, we honour this tradition by selecting only genuine, handwoven Qashgai pieces—woven in wool, dyed with earth and plant, and tied to no season but the one in which it was made.
The Qashgai are Turkic by descent, arriving in Persia centuries ago and bringing with them a distinct language, culture, and artistic sensibility. Unlike urban rug weavers, Qashgai women wove for survival and ceremony—not commerce. Their looms were horizontal, their dyes handmade, and their designs passed down by memory, not blueprint.
Each Qashgai Persian Rug is the product of this lineage. Nothing in it is ornamental for its own sake. Every motif carries a purpose. Stars, animals, trees of life, medallions—these are the stories and symbols of a people who slept under canvas and herded sheep through highland passes.
And so, to own a Qashgai Persian Rug is to hold a piece of nature—not nature as backdrop, but nature as home, as compass, as inheritance.
The wool in a Qashgai Persian Rug is thick, warm, and unrefined in the best sense. Raised from their own flocks, the Qashgai shepherds ensured a supply of lanolin-rich fleece, well suited to withstand both weather and wear. This wool, when hand-spun, retains a liveliness that no machine can replicate. It grips dye with vitality and holds texture even after decades of use.
The colours—drawn from madder root, indigo, walnut husk, pomegranate rind, and other natural sources—shift subtly across the field. These tonal variations, known as abrash, are not flaws; they are part of the rug’s voice. They tell us the story of the wool, the pot, the season in which it was dyed.
At The Rug Shop, we prize this honesty. We choose Qashgai Persian Rugs that retain their original texture and tonal depth—pieces that show not only skill but life.
A Qashgai Persian Rug is never meek. Its design is bold, its scale commanding, its rhythm unpredictable. Central medallions often dominate, flanked by intricate corner spandrels and bordered by multiple guard stripes. But no two are the same. The weaver improvises, adjusts, inserts animals or shrubs, perhaps a comb or an amulet. Symmetry is a guideline, not a rule.
This spontaneity is the signature of tribal weaving. Where city rugs may repeat and refine, the Qashgai Persian Rug breathes and expands. It feels as if it were still unfolding, its geometry anchored not in paper, but in memory and imagination.
Even the borders defy expectation. Some are geometric and tight; others loose and flowing. Some include bands of flowers, others herds of stylised deer. All speak with a voice older than trend, deeper than design.
What makes the Qashgai Persian Rug endure is not just its strength, but its honesty. It is a rug that makes no attempt to hide its origin. It shows you the hand that made it, the wool that fed it, the dyes that grew beside it. It carries the freedom of open space and the discipline of tradition. It is as much a field as it is a floor covering.
In a world of replicas and factory gloss, the Qashgai Persian Rug offers something elemental. Something real. It is not polished, but it is pure. And it reminds us that the most lasting forms of beauty are those rooted in necessity, in heritage, and in the rhythm of the land.
At The Rug Shop, we offer only authentic Qashgai pieces—rugs that still smell faintly of the mountains, that still carry the irregularities of a tribal loom, that still feel like they belong to a world of stars, goats, fire, and frost.
To own one is to join that world. Even briefly. Even with shoes on.
