Firstly you may like to read “Blind White Fish in Persia”, an account of a scientific search among the “Qainats” for a rare species of small fish.
To “get” Kerman one has to know it is waterless, and fed by the underground streams known as “Qainats”. The qainats are dug manually and are so old they even have their own blind fish, discovered and named by these scientists in 1952. How old must an ecology be to have unique species?
So out of the way is Kerman that it was completely missed by the Mongolian Hordes of Chingiz Khan and Tamerlane which ensured the survival of the ancient qainats. Great trade with India followed and the colours to this day are more like those of the Indian Moghul than Persia.
Weaving is done in small ateliers within the family compound. These ateliers and the associated spinning and dyeing processes are usually quality-controlled and owned by locally royal families in a sort of Marxist feudalism. These few Families, such as Arjomand and Atiyeh, will have warehouses in New York Paris and London. Payment for the weaving is done on a piece work format, within the gender confines of the family home although out of pocket unforeseen expenses are funded by the owner families.
