The Taimani are indigenous Afghanis and farm between Herat and Chuckchoran, Their weaving reached a low point in the last decade or two and under pressure from the few small-time specialists around the world, and seeing the fashionable popularity of inferior rugs, they have joined the veg / plant dye revolution. Already in full swing in Iran and Afghanistan this return to traditions is hopefully a success for the irascible Taimani.
Socially this weaving strengthens the family/clan ties by providing more power to women. The focus is on premium wool, and dyeing, and especially the natural preparations of washing and carding, as well as of course the telling of stories, providing talismanic protection by the actual knotting.
We, the international friends of traditional weaving tribes and villages, happily pay an absolute premium and this reinforces the power of the domestic arts.
