How to break up the space, “horror vacui” as the Italians say.

When we were last there, in 2018, we visited the mausoleum of the Biblical figures Esther and Mordechai who had escaped from the Babylonians over the wild mountain corridors of the Zagros range, where this Persian Bakhtiari Rug originates. It is a resounding call of tradition, a masterpiece of texture and tone that reflects the life and movement of the Bakhtiari tribe. Proudly offered by The Rug Shop, this rug is a perfect embodiment of strength and artistry, built to last yet yet impishly agile.

The Bakhtiari tribe/nation of the Zagros Mountains celebrate craftsmanship and enduring strength. This rug is thickly knotted of robust sheep wool, its dense pile designed for a lifetime of use. The dyes—both vegetal and mineral—combine in strong contrasts to create a visual impact that is unmistakably Persian and unmistakably powerful.

  • Material: Hand-spun sheep wool.
  • Dyes: Natural
  • Age: Late 20th Century
  • Condition: Great, very hard wearing.
  • Origin: South West Persia

Good to know

We photograph our rugs in real rooms and natural light, so you see them as they are. Screens vary, so if you’d like a video or more photos before you decide, just ask.

Preferably sweep with a stiff straw broom. Vacuum only lightly, in the direction of the pile, not against the grain.

  • Turn it and use it upside down for a fortnight every spring.
  • Move furniture a few centimetres every few months.
  • Spills: wipe or scrape off the excess, then sponge with cold water, but not to excess. Suds from a eucalyptus wool wash are fine. Always sponge inwards. Lift and turn the wet area over until dry.
  • Never leave a rug on the floor wet, and never put pot plants on it.

Don’t be too precious. Our rugs are pure top-grade wool and virtually indestructible; there are many antique rugs still going strong today. Just stay natural, with no modern chemical cleaners or machines, and return your rug to us for a complete wash every few years.

PS Some rugs enjoy a picnic!
