DJUL-Y-KHIR “Bearskin”

Rare and intriguing.

NE Afghanistan or SE Uzbekistan. In the 1970’s and 80’s when these appeared in the Kabul market they were delivered by Uzbeks from Badakhshan. Some suggested a Wakhan origin but my little research points to the Kashkadarya region. Stalin, 5 year plans etc put an end to this lifestyle. From the 1930’s one finds the same unique weave structure with repeating patterns of a generic Central Asian vocabulary. Evidence of the homogenisation of culture in the region under the USSR.

So the culture, whatever it was, has disappeared. There is nobody who can do this weaving today. I have tried, offering rewards etc to no avail.

Murray Eiland Jr of San Francisco has a theory the people were the descendants of the Arabs who brought Islam to the area Circa 10th C. He cites some fragments in the V&A collected by Thesiger or his contemporary having the same distinctive weave.

Certainly I have heard them called Araby and Araby Uzbek in the Afghan markets.

Warp wool, weft wool. Continuous warps are looped over to form the symmetrical knots. 3 passes of weft. Spiral braided diamond macrame on the ends.
