Jahanghir Revival Rug
352 x 271 cm

$17,200

Like the great Mughal carpets made in Lahore in the reign (1605-1627) of Jahangir, the red is not from the usual Persian madder (rubia tinctorum) but rather the cochineal known as Lac.

This expensive “beetle gall” dye is here true to shade. The outstanding harmony of the vegetal colours is enhanced by clipping the pile of some of the areas of dark indigo to give the impression of an actual 400 year old carpet.

Afghans remember when they held sway over an empire that stretched from Persia to the Bay of Bengal.  These weavers could probably claim descent from those of the time of Jahangir.
